
Course Description:
This course will explore the rich and fascinating history, eras, and styles of Classical music. Throughout we will explore connections and mutual influences between classical music and a variety of other musical genres and styles. We will begin by surveying core musical elements and instruments, and then trace the development of classical music from the medieval period through to the contemporary compositions of today. Students will learn to identify core musical elements such as melody, rhythm, and harmony; and begin to differentiate between various musical periods and styles. Each week, standout composers and masterpieces of each era will be explored within their historical and artistic contexts through listening, reading, and discussion. This course will deepen your knowledge and appreciation of classical music and beyond in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. No previous experience or music theory knowledge is required!
