Planet Alignment on 21st January 2025

21st January 2025
Est. Reading: 2 minutes

On January 21, 2025, skywatchers have the opportunity to witness a remarkable celestial event: the alignment of six planets—Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune—in the evening sky.

Optimal Viewing Time: Shortly after sunset, between 5:00 PM and 9:00 PM local time, is ideal for observing this planetary alignment. The most favorable moment is around 6:00 PM when the planets are approximately 20 degrees above the horizon.

Where to Look:

  • Venus and Saturn: Located low in the southwestern sky, these planets will appear close together, about 3 degrees apart. Both are visible to the naked eye, with Venus being particularly bright.
  • Jupiter: Positioned higher in the southwestern sky, Jupiter is easily identifiable due to its brightness.
  • Mars: Look towards the eastern sky to spot Mars, which will be visible throughout the night.
  • Uranus and Neptune: These distant planets are situated between Mars and Jupiter. Due to their faintness, viewing them requires high-powered binoculars or a telescope.

Viewing Tips:

  • Location: Choose a spot with an unobstructed view of the horizon and minimal light pollution to enhance visibility.
  • Equipment: While Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn can be seen with the naked eye, using binoculars or a telescope will provide a clearer view, especially for Uranus and Neptune.
  • Timing: Begin your observation shortly after sunset to catch Venus, Saturn, and Neptune before they set between approximately 9:00 PM and 10:30 PM local time.

This planetary alignment is a rare event, with the next occurrence of five or more planets aligning not expected until 2040.
