A large group of psychologists, patients and health and social care professionals, have come together from all over the island of Ireland to discuss the critical role of psychology in improving health and wellbeing.
In the first time in over a decade, the All-Ireland Psychology, Health and Medicine Annual Conference has been held in Northern Ireland at Queens Universitys Riddel Hall.
Dr Lisa Graham-Wisener is a Reader in Health Psychology at Queens University and is also co-chair of the conference. She comments: At a time when our health system is under significant pressure, the contribution of psychologists has never been more vital. Greater recognition of their role is essential to meeting the complex health and well-being challenges we face across the island of Ireland.
Health psychology is a rapidly evolving profession and focuses on how psychological, social, and behavioural factors influence health, illness, and healthcare. It plays a crucial role in understanding and promoting both physical and mental health. It supports behaviour change to improve health outcomes, helps people to manage chronic health conditions, and encourages healthier lifestyles.
Dr Laura McGowan is a Senior Lecturer in Nutrition and Behaviour Change at Queens University and is also co-chair of the conference. She adds: This years conference at Queens highlights innovative research and practice in the field of health and behavioural science. It also showcases how psychology and a deeper understanding of human behaviour can advance solutions to our most pressing health and well-being issues for the population.
While we have many highly skilled graduates, there is a pressing need to develop a greater understanding of the value of health psychology and behavioural science career pathways, to fully harness the expertise of this profession.
Northern Irelands Health Minister Mike Nesbitt opened the conference. He says: I was delighted to attend todays Psychology, Health and Medicine Conference. Health Psychology touches all aspects of our healthcare system reminding us that health and illness is not just about biology and medicine, but rather that health and illness is also determined by our mind, behaviour, environment and society.
Good mental health is linked to good physical health and positive relations with families, friends, and colleagues. It enables us to fulfil our potential, engage in community life, and lead full and rewarding lives.
The conference is a long-standing collaboration between the Division of Health Psychology Northern Ireland (DHPNI) and the Psychological Society of Irelands Division of Health Psychology (DHP PSI).
