In this special guest blog from Triage Method, the team explores some of the most effective problem-solving strategies used by top coaches to help clients overcome challenges and unlock progress. From deductive logic to root cause analysis, these techniques aren’t just theory, they’re tools that transform coaching into a results-driven craft.
As a coach, you are in large part, a problem solver. You have the knowledge and skills to help your clients when they’re stuck. Here are some of our favourite problem solving strategies at Triage Method.
Deductive Reasoning: The Architect’s Blueprint
Deductive reasoning starts with general principles and applies them to specific cases, like an architect using fundamental engineering principles to design a building. In coaching, this means working backward from established truths:
Premise 1: Muscle grows when subjected to progressive overload.
Premise 2: Client A has been lifting the same weights for six months.
Conclusion: Client A is not progressing due to a lack of progressive overload.
This method eliminates guesswork, allowing for precise problem-solving. However, it only works if your premises are accurate. If the foundational information is incorrect, your conclusions will be flawed, making it essential to combine deductive reasoning with other approaches.
Inductive Reasoning: The Detective’s Notebook
When clear principles don’t exist, inductive reasoning becomes essential. This method involves gathering observations, identifying patterns, and drawing conclusions based on data rather than established rules.
For example, if a client is struggling to lose weight despite eating clean, and they also report feeling fatigued, you investigate further and discover they consume multiple energy drinks daily and get only five hours of sleep. Recognizing the pattern, you link sleep deprivation to hormonal dysregulation, cravings, and metabolic inefficiency.
Inductive reasoning helps uncover hidden factors affecting progress, requiring careful observation and attention to detail.
Algorithmic Problem-Solving: The Engineer’s Blueprint
Certain problems require structured, step-by-step solutions rather than creativity. Algorithmic problem-solving follows a logical progression to ensure predictable outcomes, like a GPS mapping out the most efficient route.
For example, designing a muscle gain program isn’t about trial and error- it involves systematically applying principles of progressive overload, periodisation, and recovery.
This approach ensures measurable, repeatable progress. However, algorithmic thinking is limited when human behaviour and unpredictability come into play.
Divide and Conquer: Solving Problems in Pieces
Big problems can feel overwhelming. Breaking them down into smaller components makes them easier to tackle.
If a client isn’t losing fat, instead of addressing everything at once, you analyse:
Nutrition: Are they tracking food accurately?
Training: Are they training with enough intensity?
Sleep & Stress: Are external factors affecting metabolism?
Addressing each component separately leads to better results. Prioritization is key - start with the factors that will have the biggest impact.
Root Cause Analysis: Fixing Problems at Their Source
Surface-level symptoms often mask deeper issues. If a client keeps missing workouts, rather than blaming motivation, you dig deeper:
Is their schedule unrealistic?
Are they struggling with stress or life circumstances?
Do they find their workouts unenjoyable?
By identifying and addressing the root cause, you prevent recurring problems.
Problems require experimentation. If a client struggles to adhere to a diet, you test different approaches until you find what works best. The key is tracking results carefully so failures serve as learning opportunities rather than random setbacks.
