Tutor: Therese Hackett, ceramicist, artist and tour Guide.
Therese is a ceramic artist based in Dublin, Ireland. She is a graduate of National College of Art and Design Dublin. She also holds a Master’s Degree in Education and Management from Dublin City University.
This course takes place in the People s College on Tuesday from 2.30 - 4.30pm. The class will suit beginners to clay.
Unleash your creativity and learn the timeless craft of pottery in this hands-on 10-week course designed especially for adult beginners. In a relaxed, supportive environment, you’ll explore the art of hand-building with clay, focusing on two functional projects: a beautifully crafted mug and plate.
Guided by an experienced ceramicist, you'll start by learning clay basics and fundamental techniques such as pinch, coil, and slab construction. As your confidence grows, you’ll plan, build, and refine your own plate using slab-building methods, textures, and decorative surface techniques like carving and sgraffito.
The second half of the course turns to mug-making—shaping cylinders, attaching bases and handles, and exploring creative embellishments. You’ll also be introduced to surface decoration using slips and underglazes before learning the basics of glaze application through dipping, pouring, and brushing.
In the final session, you'll review your finished, glazed, and kiln-fired pieces during a relaxed group showcase, celebrating your creative journey and newfound skills.
All materials, tools, and firings for two finished pieces are included. No prior experience needed—just a willingness to get a little messy and have fun!
Whether you’re looking for a creative outlet, a new hobby, or just two hours of relaxing “you-time” each week, this limited-capacity course (max 10 participants) offers the perfect introduction to pottery. Book early to secure your place!
