Are you interested in building essential healthcare support skills and specialist knowledge for working with older people? Forus Training’s combined QQI Level 5 programme brings together Care Skills followed immediately by Care of the Older Person, giving you a clear, practical pathway for care work in a variety of settings.

Duration: 14 weeks total (two 7-week modules completed one after the other)

About This Couse:

This comprehensive 14-week course supports you to deliver safe, person-centred care and then deepens that learning by focusing on the specific needs of older people. You’ll learn how to promote dignity, respect, independence, empowerment and holistic wellbeing while developing key practical skills needed in healthcare and community care environments.

Module Order:

  1. Care Skills (Weeks 1–7)
  2. Care of the Older Person (Weeks 8–14)

Module 1: Care Skills (Weeks 1–7)

Throughout this module, you will:

  • Identify relevant groups of people in need of health care.
  • Examine physical, emotional, social, psychological and spiritual needs of a range of groups, taking individual variation into account.
  • Identify hygiene needs of dependent clients.
  • Discuss prevention of pressure sores.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of correct procedures for cleaning and replacing a range of patient equipment.
  • Adapt levels of assistance to the needs of particular clients.
  • Demonstrate interpersonal skills when dealing with clients, including empathy, respect, patience and effective communication.
  • Exercise initiative to improve client involvement in social events, outings, occupational therapy and physiotherapy.
  • Contribute to safe and hygienic environments, including safe disposal of soiled linen.
  • Assist clients with dressing, grooming, eating, drinking, toileting, continence promotion, mobility and (where appropriate) social needs.
  • Apply client safety and security procedures, including appropriate on-site care for washing, bathing, showering, positioning, moving and handling.
  • Give assistance that enhances privacy, dignity, independence and positive self-image.
  • Support clients using a range of care equipment (e.g., sensory equipment, aids to encourage independence, mobility/feeding/washing/elimination aids and hoists).
  • Report changes in client condition to the relevant supervisor.
  • Complete client documentation where appropriate.

  • Assignment – 40%
  • Skills Demonstration – 60%

Module 2: Care of the Older Person (Weeks 8–14)

Throughout this module, you will:

  • Discuss age-related issues including healthy ageing, demographic trends, physiological and psychological processes of ageing, social impacts, and attitudes toward ageing and older people.
  • Analyse the role of the healthcare assistant in promoting positive attitudes to ageing.
  • Explore the contributions of statutory and voluntary agencies in supporting older people’s wellbeing.
  • Examine older people’s full range of needs: physical, social, emotional, psychological, recreational, financial, environmental and spiritual.
  • Promote best practice care for older people, including empowerment, advocacy, independence, individualised care, dignity, respect, choice and self-esteem.
  • Include family and carers as partners in care.

Assessment (Care of the Older Person):

  • Skills Demonstration – 60%
  • Project – 40%

They also offer additional education and learning activities, assessment support, opportunities to submit drafts, and meetings before or after class to answer queries that cannot be covered in the session (by appointment).

Career PathThis course leads to an award on the National Framework of Qualifications. Students who successfully complete this programme may use their credits towards completing a higher level of study.

Students who successfully complete this Major Award can also use the Certificate as the basis for entry into selected courses in Third Level Colleges and Universities.
