Technological University Dublin (TU Dublin), Ireland’s first technological university, has been formally established by law last week. This follows the announcement last month by the Minister for Education and Skills Joe McHugh T.D. and Minister for Higher Education, Mary Mitchell O’Connor T.D., that Professor David FitzPatrick is to be the first president of the new institution.

TU Dublin: Changes in Store

TU Dublin will become the largest Higher Education Institution in the State with almost 28,000 students and over 3,000 staff. It will be a multi-campus university with campuses in Grangegorman, Blanchardstown and Tallaght as well as a “virtual” campus. Dublin Institute of Technology, Institute of Technology Tallaght and Institute of Technology Blanchardstown have now formally combined to become Technological University Dublin.

Minister McHugh and Minister Mitchell O’Connor have also announced the members of the first governing body of the institution, to be chaired by Professor Tom Collins, who are Dr Caitríona Fisher, Ms Imelda Reynolds, and Mr Paddy Lavelle.

Response

Minister Mitchell O’Connor said “I am absolutely delighted that after years of hard work by a wide array of people and institutions including the staff and students of the three institutions now merged into this new Higher Education Institution, the Houses of the Oireachtas and relevant Government Departments, this first day of the New Year of 2019 marks the start of a new era in Irish higher education, with the formal establishment of the first technological university in the State, Technological University (TU) Dublin.”

Their social media accounts have been changing and Facebook will change soon too to reflect these new developments. The DIT, ITB & ITT pages will be coming together and TU Dublin will have one official Facebook page.
