News this week of an impressive Chinese New Years Festival in Dublin to be held in various venues from the 8th to the 22nd of February.

Always a big draw, the festival showpiece is the New Year Festival Carnival. This year it takes place in Temple Bar Meeting House Square on Sunday 10th February from 12 noon to 6pm, and ushers in the excellently named Year of the Snake.

There will be lots of other things to do – many of which are free to the public – including a Chinese Film Festival, a programme of children’s events, a special Chinese New Year s Day Concert in the RDS, and demonstrations of Chinese cookery, recipes, etc.

And our humble contribution to the festivities A suggestion that you learn to speak Chinese. Motivations are not hard to come by: a large Chinese community with a presence in towns and cities all over the country, increasing business and academic links with a global economic powerhouse, a diverse and fascinating culture, and the sheer intellectual thrill of learning something new that’s completely alien to Irish and European culture.
