Atlantic Technological University (ATU) will mark a significant milestone this May as it celebrates 30 years of its pioneering Heritage programme. The anniversary event, hosted by the university’s Heritage Society, is set to take place on Wednesday, 7 May 2025 at 4pm in the Wine Geese Training Bar on the ATU Galway City campus.

The celebration will feature keynote speeches from Dr Mark McCarthy, Senior Lecturer and Programme Chair of Heritage Studies at ATU, and Paul Duffy, archaeologist, historian, and author.

Established in 1995, ATU’s Heritage Studies programme has become a cornerstone of interdisciplinary education in Ireland, preparing students for impactful careers in the heritage, tourism, and cultural sectors. The programme blends academic rigour with practical skills, drawing from a diverse range of disciplines including history, archaeology, geography, ecology, literature, creative and cultural industries, museology, digital humanities, and tourism. It has developed a strong reputation for engaging students with the practical challenges of conserving and interpreting heritage in its many forms—built, cultural, natural, and digital.

The Heritage Research Group at ATU exemplifies the programme’s commitment to applied, community-based research. Its collaborative work with partners in the cultural heritage, historic environment, and tourism sectors reflects the programme's enduring relevance and outward-looking focus.

Dr Mark McCarthy, who has been central to the programme’s evolution, is recognised for his academic leadership and long-standing contributions to heritage education. Under his guidance, the programme has expanded to reflect both local and global heritage concerns. His dedication to mentoring students and building partnerships has strengthened ATU’s standing as a leader in heritage studies across Ireland.

Also speaking at the event will be Paul Duffy, a graduate of the BA (Hons) in Heritage Studies at the former GMIT. Now a leading archaeologist and published novelist, Duffy has directed major excavations in Dublin and led archaeological projects internationally, including in France, Australia, and the UK. His historical research focuses on medieval history and the Crusades, particularly Irish participation in the 13th-century Cathar Crusade in Languedoc. His novel Run with the Hare, Hunt with the Hound showcases his expertise in blending storytelling with historical insight.

The event will reflect on three decades of academic achievement, alumni success, and community engagement, while also looking ahead to the future of heritage education. Alumni, current students, faculty, and partners are invited to join in celebrating this significant chapter in ATU’s academic journey.
