Applications are now open for the David Shaw-Smith Legacy Award, with the deadline extended to 29 June, giving more Irish craftspeople the opportunity to apply for this prestigious recognition.

Established in 2022, the award champions Ireland’s master craftspeople in the later stages of their careers, recognising long-standing dedication, exceptional skill, and continued creative potential. It also honours the legacy of David Shaw-Smith, who, alongside his wife Sally, produced and directed the acclaimed documentary series Hands and created more than 138 television documentaries during his career.

Supporting Excellence in Irish Craft

This year’s award has increased its financial support, reinforcing its commitment to sustaining and developing excellence within Ireland’s craft sector.

The David Shaw-Smith Legacy Award offers a main prize of €5,000, awarded to a craftsperson demonstrating outstanding achievement and a strong vision for future work within their practice.

In addition, five shortlisted applicants will each receive €2,000 in project support, designed to help advance the development of their craft projects. This additional funding aims to broaden access and ensure more makers benefit from meaningful support across the sector.

Focus on Future Potential

The award is designed not only to recognise past achievement, but also to invest in the future of Irish craft. Judges will consider each applicant’s body of work, as well as their potential to continue contributing to and enriching Ireland’s design and craft landscape.

The initiative places particular emphasis on how makers intend to develop their practice, explore new directions, and pass on their expertise within their craft disciplines.

Encouraging More Applications

With the deadline now extended to 29 June, eligible craftspeople are encouraged to apply and take advantage of this opportunity for recognition and support.

The award continues to highlight the importance of sustaining Ireland’s craft heritage while enabling experienced makers to progress new work and creative development at a vital stage in their careers.
