Introduction:

The proliferation of the use of the word trauma in a wide range of contexts has caused confusion for many. This course aims to unravel this through a grounded, critical introduction to trauma-informed work. Learners will learn to differentiate between established concepts, emerging theories and popularised claims. Learners will feel more confident in working with trauma in a safe, ethical and appropriately paced way.

 

Course Content:

At the end of this workshop participants will be able to do the following:

  • Use shared evidence-informed language to talk about trauma safety and nervous system regulation within their professional role and organization.
  • Make more informed judgments about when to prioritize safety stabilization and pacing in work with trauma exposed individuals and when to seek additional training or referral.
  • Recognize signs of heightened or dysregulated nervous system states in themselves and others and respond in ways that reduce risk and support regulation within the boundaries of their role.
  • Apply trauma informed principles including choice collaboration and ethical pacing to everyday professional interactions decision making and learning environments.
  • Engage critically with trauma related models and claims allowing them to adopt useful ideas without over generalization or uncritical application.
  • Reflect on their own professional limits and responsibilities supporting safety practice and reducing the risk of overreach or inadvertent harm.
