The English invasion of Ireland and its impact

Course Content

This module begins with the developments within Ireland and the wider world that led to the English invasion in 1169. It will introduce students to the political, religious and economic context of this period and outline the key personalities and events of the 1160s and 1170s, before turning to the long-term impacts of these events. It then traces the expansion of the English colony in Ireland, looking at the reasons for its early successes and the challenges that it and its population faced as the centuries wore on, as well as how the Irish were impacted by and adapted to the colony’s existence.
