Dublin City University (DCU) will host a guest lecture on 22 April 2026 featuring Professor Marvin Formosa of the University of Malta, a leading international scholar in gerontology and lifelong learning. The event will explore the evolving role of education in later life, with a focus on both the opportunities and limitations faced by older learners in an ageing society.
Professor Formosa, based in the Department of Gerontology and Dementia Studies at the University of Malta, is internationally recognised for his extensive research on ageing, lifelong learning, and social policy. He has published widely on topics including population ageing, the impact of COVID-19 on older adults, and international frameworks for ageing policy. His academic work includes participation in major international research projects across Europe and beyond, and he currently serves as Director of the International Institute on Ageing (United Nations – Malta) and Chairperson of the National Commission for Active Ageing in Malta. In 2021, he was elected a Fellow of the Gerontological Society of America.
The lecture, titled “Lifelong learning in later life: Possibilities, limitations and future prospects,” will examine how education systems can better support older adults, addressing both structural barriers and emerging opportunities. It will also consider future policy directions and the importance of inclusive education in responding to demographic change and increasing life expectancy.
The event forms part of DCU’s ongoing commitment to research-led discussion on education, ageing, and social inclusion, and provides an opportunity for students, researchers, and practitioners to engage directly with current international thinking in the field.
The lecture will take place on Wednesday, 22 April 2026, from 11:00am to 12:30pm, in Room Q217 on the second floor of the Business School, DCU Glasnevin Campus. All interested attendees are welcome, and registration is available via the online form.
