Course Description

Course Title : Philosophy & Film – Introduction

Waterford College of Further Education

While Philosophy can illuminate various aspects of film, film can also provide new ways to consider core concerns of Philosophical enquiry. This course will explore the ways in which films can be seen to pose questions which traditionally have been considered as central to Philosophy.

This course will examine parallels between the themes of internationally renowned directors and the writings of a variety of major Western thinkers. A primary aim of this course is to show how film can present philosophical questions in an accessible way, thereby highlighting their centrality to contemporary issues within areas such as ethics, politics and aesthetics. This study of the relationships between philosophy and film will enable the questions such as the following to be asked:

If we judge film to be an art form, how does it compare with other forms of art such as literature and painting?
Is film to be valued for its ability to merely raise questions of a philosophical nature, or can it be seen as a medium in which we can locate solutions to such problems?
How can films enrich our capacities for critical thought?
In what sense can films be judged as representations of the truth?
