Course Title : Gardening for the Beginner

Waterford College of Further Education



Learn how to create a garden paradise out of a small area from a simple window box to looking after a large garden. To be able to achieve a beautiful oasis over time and to learn how to care for it. This course will help you get on your way, with some simple steps.
Each week you will learn about different plants and their uses in the garden. From doing a garden year calendar, making garden plans for different areas, planting out your plants in the right places and for the different seasons to get full use of your garden all year round.
From vegetables to ornamental plants you will learn how to care for all of these.
All handouts will be supplied by the tutor.

10 week course
Week 1:
Introduction to the course and necessary materials i.e. pots, planters, compost, plants or bulbs, seeds, folder and plastic sleeves.
Demonstration of how to make an herb planter, to be done in class the following week.

Week 2:
Make up herb planters.
Demonstration of how to put together a yearly gardening calendar.
The difference between annuals and perennial plants.
Explanation of shaded plants and how to use them in the garden.

Week 3:
How to make a raised bed for kitchen vegetables.
How and why you rotate these beds.
Explanation of plants for full sun and partial shade and where they fit into your garden.
Demonstration of how to make an indoor garden or outside planter for Valentine’s Day.

Week 4:
Make a planter of indoor or outdoor plants suitable for Valentine’s Day.
Demonstration of how to prepare soft wood cuttings.
Drawing up summer flower beds.
Evergreen plants and their uses in the garden.

Week 5:
How to look after a lawn, from seeding to caring for your lawn.
Explanation of coastal plants and how they can be used in all gardens.
Demonstration of planting bulbs for summer flowers.
Planting seeds and pricking out seedlings.

Week 6:
Planting bulbs and seeds for summer use
Demonstration of how to make a planter for Easter or Mother’s Day.
Acid plants and their uses.

Week 7:
Making planters for Easter or Mother’s Day.
How to move shrubs and plant trees or shrubs.
Sensory plants and how to use them within the garden.

Week 8:
Pruning of Roses and how to care for them all summer.
Dividing Perennials
Demonstration of how to make a summer basket and planters.
Colour coding your plants – cool colours, all white, hot colours.
Allergy friendly plants and how they can benefit a person’s life.

Week 9:
Make up baskets and planters of summer plants.
Planting summer flower beds and kitchen vegetables.
Indoor plants and how to use them.

Week 10:
Demonstration of how to make a simple pond.
Questions from the class on anything they are not sure of, to maintain their garden successfully over the summer.
