About the course

This level 7 part time law course takes place over one or two academic years. The programme runs over three evenings per week and is also available through distance learning where all lectures are recorded and available online. Every module runs over five teaching weeks, followed by two reading weeks which are then followed by a week of examinations. Assessment varies from module to module and usually consists of assignments, workshops and examinations.

This Diploma programme has been designed with input from past graduates, members of our legal academic team, employers in legal practice and from The Irish Institute of Legal Executives.

All students will attend examinations and also practical workshops held for the more skills-based modules, such as Civil Litigation. Once you successfully complete all twelve modules you will be awarded a Diploma in Legal Studies & Practice, validated by HETAC and recognised by IILEX. Diploma graduates are eligible for enrolment as Associate Members of the Irish Institute of Legal Executives, and all participants are eligible to become Student Members of the Institute. In terms of career progression, you should be aware that currently successful completion of the Diploma also enables entry to year two of Griffith Colleges LL.B. degree programme in Irish law.

Entry Requirements Applicants should meet the standard entry requirements for level 7 programmes (min. of 5 O6/H7 grades, to include a language (English, Irish or other language) and have one to two years relevant legal work experience. Students over 23 years of age on the 1st of January on the year of admission may apply as mature students. Mature students are assessed on the basis of age and may be interviewed in advance of admission
Career Path Legal Executive A Legal Executive is a person qualified by accumulated practical experience and/or academic credentials to offer rather more than secretarial or administrative assistance to a Solicitor or other legal practitioner in the handling of client cases relating to conveyancing, probate, criminal, civil, family or other legal Acting at the direction and as agent of the practitioner and using his/her own personal experience and knowledge of the conventions and other requirements of the statutory agencies, he/she is often entrusted with the practicalities of progressing a given legal transaction initiated by the practitioner. Some Legal Executives are also Supreme Court-appointed Commissioners-for-Oaths or go on to become Solicitors themselves. The Legal Executive is a professional bound by codes of confidentiality and conduct established and enforced in Ireland by the Irish Institute of Legal Executives, a body founded for that purpose and for the advancement of the interests of Legal Executives. The governing body in Ireland for Legal Executives is IILEx.
