Programme Overview

The Community Development programme explores the key principles and practices of community development. It provides an overview of the historical and contemporary infrastructure of the community and voluntary sector in Ireland. Learners will assess diverse community development case studies and approaches, exploring their implications within local communities and wider Irish society. Learners’ own participation in the community

development process will be examined throughout and consideration given to assessing their practice and approaches through the lens of community development theory.

 

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this module students will:

  • Demonstrate a comprehensive knowledge of community development practices
  • Explain the relationship between lobbying and community development in practical terms focusing on the importance of strategy and informed debate
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the process of building strategic alliances with key representative organisations in the community and voluntary sector to effect change.
  • Identify some of the key challenges within the community development process and analyse community development responses to these challenges
  • Demonstrate community development skills in the areas of communication; capacity building; consultation and needs analysis; community engagement and participation; and lobbying strategies.

 Assessment component

As part of the assessment for this programme, learners will be required to submit an individual project and work in pairs to submit a group project.

Format

The structure of the module is based on developing an online community of practice using a blended learning approach, as follows:

Induction: 6 hour face-to-face workshop

Week 1: One hour online session on technology

Online Synchronous Teaching: 2 hours per week online over eight weeks

Online Tutorial: 2 group sessions over the duration of the course

Workshop: 6 hour face to face workshop during the module.

Cost of Module: €300 – Learners can access a small bursary, if required.

Entry Requirements Applicants should have completed the Leaving Certificate or a QQI (FETAC) Major Award at Level 5 preferably in the area of leadership, community development studies or a related area. Other applicants will be considered on a case-by-case basis in accordance with the Institute of Technology Carlow policy on recognition of prior learning (RPL). Applicants may be required to attend for an interview.
