The Open College



This Community Care assistant Major Award equips students with the skills and knowledge to care for clients in a safe and hygienic environment. You will learn about the roles and responsibilities of the Care Worker and acquire practical skills for work in the caring environments.  You will gain an understanding of the nursing process, appreciate the models of care and develop an awareness of nursing ethics and etiquette in care situations.  In addition, you will be afforded the opportunity to further your personal development and enhance your communication skills.

Whether planning to work in hospitals, in the community, in residential care or childcare learners will find stimulating and functional modules with knowledge which can easily be applied to the workplace.

Course Times This Community Care 5M2786 – QQI Level 5 Major Award course is completed through Distance Learning and there are no lectures to attend. Students can complete this course within 12 months which is ample time and can start it at any time of the year that is convenient. If students need to extend this period for any reason during or near the end of the course they can request an extension through the college.

Entry Requirements - Minimum Leaving Certificate or equivalent or relevant life and work experience. - Students will need to fulfil a minimum of 150 hours work experience as part of their work experience module with this course as some assignments will require learners to draw upon practical experience. - Certain assessments require completion of work, which must be observed and evaluated by a Supervisor or Line manager.
Career Path - Healthcare Assistants employed by the state sector – e.g. Homecare Support Scheme operated by the HSE. - Healthcare Assistants employed by Agencies. - Employees of registered care settings / private nursing homes who are required to meet the training standards for employment as a Carer. - Those who are on work experience within a care setting who wish to acquire qualifications necessary for employment. - Employment as a carer within the community health services in Childcare or Healthcare.
