Programme objectives

On completion of this training programme, participants will have:

  • A comprehensive understanding of company law and the practical aspects of setting up a business;
  • A practical insight on the key factors involved in writing a business plan and an insight into how to raise funding;
  • An excellent grasp of data protection practice, data governance, and compliance;
  • A review of the law surrounding IP and trademarks;
  • An in-depth look at the obligations on a business as an employer; and
  • Confidence to deal with practical legal, compliance, and tax issues

Programme structure and approach to learning

This new course is designed for entrepreneurs and business owners, with a particular focus on the legal and commercial needs of start-ups and SMEs. Experienced lawyers and industry experts will provide an overview on areas such as business formation and legal structures. Risk management and compliance issues including employment law and data protection will also be considered in detail. Business expansion innovation will be a key focus throughout the course. A specific module will consider the variety of funding options in the market and the legal and commercial consequences of raising capital through such mechanisms as Enterprise Ireland, (local enterprise funding) venture capital, private equity, Peer-to-Peer, and other sources.

The course aims to provide an understanding of the aspects of law that impact the day to day running of a business and will cover practical topics including guidance on the management of intellectual property rights and the essentials of entering commercial contracts. This innovative course will enhance the skillset of entrepreneurs and businesspeople, providing them with a practical approach to the law in business and a familiarity with the processes and procedures which govern how businesses operate in Ireland today.


The programme is based on the following module scheme and covers key themes as listed below:

  • Module 1: Starting your Business
  • Module 2: What is Intellectual Property
  • Module 3: Key Elements of a Contract
  • Module 4: Employment Law
  • Module 5: Social Media and Liability
  • Module 6: Data Protection and Compliance
  • Module 7: E-Commerce and Online Business


Workshops are a key feature of this course. These are designed to be interactive and involve working in groups on selected case-study problems and analysis, with an emphasis on the application of the practical elements of the course to common scenarios encountered in practice.

  • Workshop 3: Saturday 6th June 2019
