Programme Overview

VCC is working in partnership with IT Carlow to develop a blended online Bachelor of Arts in Applied Addiction Studies and Community Development (QQI Level 7).  Learners who complete Stage 1 at Level 6 of the NFQ (60 credits) are eligible to exit the programme with a “Certificate in Applied Addiction Studies and Community Development” (Minor Award Level 6) or to progress to Higher Certificate and BA awards.

This interdisciplinary 1 year blended online certificate programme aims to develop knowledge, skills and competencies in the theory and practice of applied addiction studies and community development. The purpose of the programme is to build the capacity of community drugs workers and those working and volunteering in the wider community within an addiction context.

Course Times Format This programme can be taken over 1 year (2 modules per term) or built up over a longer period to suit the needs of the learner. There are 6 modules included in the Certificate, each one is taken over 10 weeks. The structure of each module is based on developing an online community of practice using a blended learning approach, as follows: Induction: 6 hour face-to-face workshop Week 1: One hour online session on technology Online Synchronous Teaching: 2 hours per week online over eight weeks Online Tutorial: 2 group sessions over the duration of the course Workshop: 6 hour face to face workshop during the module.

Entry Requirements Applicants should have completed the Leaving Certificate or a QQI (FETAC) Major Award at Level 5 preferably in the area of addiction studies or a related area. Other applicants will be considered on a case-by-case basis in accordance with the Institute of Technology Carlow policy on recognition of prior learning (RPL). Applicants may be required to attend for an interview.
