A Beginners Photography (6:30 Class)

Dublin Camera Club

The next 6.30 class will commence in September.  It will be available to book on line shortly.

Each class is dedicated to a particular topic – including:

  • Cameras and Equipment,
  • Exposure,
  • Composition,
  • Monochrome Photography,
  • Darkroom Printing and Enlarging,
  • Holiday and Travel Photography,
  • Landscape Photography and more
  • Two Practical Workshop Sessions

Details of the January 2019 course below with additional optional workshops added this year at no additional charge.  The course content is under review and this review will ensure the best and most up to date course possible.  Full details will be available shortly at which time it will be open to reserve a place.

The cost of the course is €110 inclusive of all materials.

Persons taking the classes are automatically enrolled in the club as Associate Members for the duration of the classes.  Persons enrolling in the classes may apply for full membership of the club for at a discounted rate of €50 (normally €110).

Following the end of the course members can participate in a series of Workshops at no extra charge.  These are on alternate Mondays and cover a range of additional topics.

An introduction to the different types of cameras, lenses and accessories, with an explanation of their uses and applications.

  1. EXPOSURE PART 1 Wednesday January 30th

An explanation of the various exposure techniques which may be used in film and digital cameras; their uses and the effects obtainable.

  1. COMPOSING THE PHOTOGRAPH Wednesday February 6th

Arranging the elements of the picture to produce the most pleasing effect; what to avoid and some of the rules which may be used to improve your pictures.

3a. OPTIONAL MONDAY WORKSHOP                                      Monday February 11th

Students should take their cameras to the club tonight where they will be guided through some simple settings in preparation for the upcoming outings with mentors

  1. ESSENTIAL IMAGE EDITING                Wednesday February 13th

Transferring your images from camera to computer and using simple image editors to enhance images for greatest effect.

  1. SATURDAY OUTING WITH MENTORS Saturday February 16th

Advanced photographers from the club take beginners to an area local to the club and give advice on getting the best photograph for a given location.  This option is repeated on Sunday February 24th.

  1. MONOCHROME PHOTOGRAPHY Wednesday February 20th

An introduction to monochrome photography with all its beautiful particularities and challenges.

  1. SUNDAY OUTING WITH MENTORS Sunday February 24th

7a.  OPTIONAL MONDAY WORKSHOP                                     Monday February 25th

Students will be guided through some more advanced image editing using Lightroom and Photoshop 

  1. DARKROOM PRINTING & ENLARGING                Wednesday February 27th

A practical demonstration showing the various techniques involved in producing enlarged prints from 35mm black and white negatives. 


Class members are invited to make use of the club resources (Darkroom, Studio, Digital and Library), with expert supervision and advice.


How to capture memorable images whilst exploring nature and on holiday, avoiding the problems which may arise.

10a. OPTIONAL MONDAY WORKSHOP                                    Monday March 11th

Students are introduced to portrait photography and shown some simple posing techniques as well as an introduction to using flash on and off camera.

  1. EXPOSURE – PART 2 Wednesday March 13th

Revisiting the concepts of exposure with examples of practical situations.

  1. BEGINNERS PROGRESS Wednesday March 20th

A summing up of some of the main points raised during the course and advice on what to do next.

It is hoped that students will be encouraged to showcase some of their images in an exhibition at the end of the course.  More details as the course progresses.
