Try events are an example of how WIT puts a focus on helping students make the right decision for them. The aim of this WIT Try Languages event is to give students taster classes from WIT’s foreign language curriculum which currently includes: French, Spanish, German and Italian.

Second level students will have the opportunity to try out areas they interested in studying at third level as part of workshops and events on offer at Waterford Institute of Technology (WIT) in the coming months.

Speaking another language is one of the most exciting abilities to have and opens up the world of work in many specialist areas of science, computing, hospitality and business. Today there is a high demand for graduates who hold a second language, notably across Europe and the EU.

Popularity of WIT Try Events

WIT has increased the number and breadth of Try events from six in the previous year due to their popularity. Try Nursing, Try Sport, Try Music and Try Business are the longest-running and lecturers directly involved say they help students to confirm their choices.

WIT Registrar and Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr Derek O’Byrne, says the Try Events are an example of how the institute puts a focus on helping students make the right decision for them.

“Our right student, right programme ethos has been growing in many ways over the years. Widening the breadth of Try events means that prospective students get to experience what it is like to actually study a certain discipline.”

He says that in addition to finding out what they do like, students can quickly discover that they’re dream career or area of study is not what they expected.

“Try events are ideal for students who are unsure what an interesting area of study entails, or want to have confidence in their first choice or dream course. Finding yourself on the wrong course as a first year student is a painful experience. Initiatives such as our Try events, on top of open days, and helplines are just some of the ways we help students have a better chance they are going to embrace the area of study they choose.”

Time to choose

The Try events are part of WIT’s initiatives to meet third level students’ need for time and space to decide on the career path for them, combined with a modern set of courses that meet the requirements of employers in Ireland and abroad. As well as Try events, students can also choose common entry courses.

Dr O’Byrne says “Helping students making the right choice for them is something we care strongly about at WIT.” These initiatives have been recognised by the institute’s high ranking in The Sunday Times Good University Guide.

Try WIT events are open for application at www.wit.ie/trywit.
