Our voice is our primary means of communication both socially and professionally. It defines where we are from, it illustrates how we are feeling, and most importantly it has a huge bearing on how others trust and respect our relevance in their lives.
Recent research from the Psychology Department of the University of Albany has shown that the voice can also reveal your personality, your height, your health, your sexual activity and your true emotions (even when you don’t want it to!). In other words it is a vital part of who we are, and how others perceive us.
So here’s the big question, if it is of such importance why do very few of us do so little to improve the quality of our voice?
Some might say that they don’t want to be fake, or that they want to be themselves, or that they don’t want to act or perform for the sake of others, but yet we do many things to ‘enhance’ our image for ourselves and others. People wash their hair to keep it clean and condition it to keep it shiny – it that faking it, or just good personal hygiene? People take care over what they wear for work or for special occasions. It makes them feel confident and good about themselves – is this acting, or just looking your best? The truth is advertisements and tips on how to smell better, look better and eat healthier surround us – but rarely do we get advice on how to sound better! The irony is that if we spent a fraction of the time on our voice that we spend on our physical appearance, we would all have healthy and vibrant voices that make us feel comfortable and confident.
Unlike clothes, hairstyles, shoes, cars, bags, suntans, mobile phones and food, our voice is with us all the time. We only have one wonderful, magnificent, precious voice! And when it is looked after and nourished, it can do more than any of the above ‘recyclables’ when we want others to get the best impression of our mind, humour, thoughts and true selves.
In a few small steps over a relatively short amount of time, it is remarkably easy to get your voice purring like a late night radio host. No longer will you hear your voice back on your answering service and scream with embarrassment! There are very practical ways to adjust your breathing, to improve the way you sit and stand, and to do vocal exercises that require you to take absolutely no extra time from your day, to achieve a voice that you will love, and others will love to hear.
