Singing

As the Girls Aloud and Westlife have demonstrated, you no longer need to play an instrument to make it in the music business. Looking pretty and being able to carry a tune are the top criteria for making it big. We can't help you with the first one but there are many courses available that can get you singing, at least in the shower.

If you want to perform 'Danny Boy' at your son's wedding, then a singing course can help you control the raging emotion inside and make it to the end without breaking down. A course can teach you important skills like breath control and vocal technique. Depending on the class, you can also learn sight-reading and the theory of music. Your singing teacher will tell you the areas that you need to work on and advise you on appropriate vocal exercises.

Don't worry if you sound like a cow going unwillingly into the arms of Jesus, as there are singing classes available for all abilities. It is possible to make even the worst singer passable, although miracles are rare. If you have a terrible voice, then you're not going to end up sounding like Frank Sinatra. Voices are categorized by range, which in turn is determined by the length and thickness of the vocal cords. A person's range can be extended through training but it can't exceed the physical limitations of their vocal chords

Singing classes aren't about criticism - they provide a time and place to practice singing, away from the public eye. Let's face it, that woman stared very hard when you performed 'My Way' in the biscuit aisle at Tesco's - you'd expect a bit more support from your wife. It also gives you a wider repertoire. Knowing two songs all the way through isn't much use for performing - what if you get an encore?

Let's assume that you want to be a professional singer. The scary statistics are that 95 percent of those looking to break into the business don't make it big. However, if you are truly dedicated you won't let this stop you.

If you want to be the next Natalie Merchant, then you are going to have to get signed by a record company. There is no sure-fire way to achieve this. A clear demo tape of your singing is useful to have if a record company executive drops into your next gig. Doing gigs, whether it is on the street or in a venue, is the best way to get ahead. If you a stuck for offers, the Ha'penny Bridge Inn, 42, Wellington Quay in Dublin 2, caters for all-comers at their weekly talent show, the Battle of the Axe.

A lot of work is found through networking and word of mouth, so gigs are a good opportunity to get leads. Don't expect to play the Point straight away - many performers earn their wages as backing singers and by performing at weddings and functions.

And remember, being a successful singer isn't all down to talent. Ability is important but many record companies are looking for a certain sound or look to fit with the mood and market of the time. Don't give up - your style has to come into fashion at some stage.

So if you see yourself purring into a mic for your profession, or even if you just want to knock them dead at karaoke, then put your mouth where your money is and take a course in singing.
