Radio Broadcasting
Buggles had it all wrong - Video never killed the Radio Star. In fact radio star disarmed video, cuffed him about the ear, and sent him packing into the entertainment backwater that is 24-hour music video channels.
Radio listenership in Ireland is stronger than ever, with nearly 1.75 million people tuning in to a local or national station every day. More than TV, or any other medium, radio is the pulse of Irish society and the national forum for music, sport, current affairs, local issues, Gerry Ryan’s favourite foodstuffs, and pretty much everything else.
A wide range of broadcasting evening classes are available nationwide. They cater to all tastes and ambitions: beginner and advanced learners; those who want to begin a career in radio or those who are simply curious; and a knowledge of radio will also prove useful for existing professionals in a number of industries – advertising, marketing, public relations, etc.
What will you learn? A class will typically introduce the student to the technology in a modern radio studio: how to operate the equipment and produce your own radio show. Radio presenting is another core element of broadcasting that is usually covered. This involves learning voice and microphone techniques (i.e. finding your ‘radio voice’), interview skills, and how to effectively organise a panel discussion.
Courses might also cover research skills, essential for any radio show dealing with current affairs, topical issues or special interest subjects. Broadcasting classes come in a variety of formats. Some might be dedicated to a specialised area such as newsreading or community radio, while others might combine broadcasting with journalism or media studies.
Radio broadcasting courses are extremely popular with Ireland’s adult learners and there has never been a better time to realise your dreams of becoming the next Terry Wogan, Dave Fanning or DJ Smashie.
