Motions Health & Fitness Training run courses for people who wish to train as fitness instructors/personal trainers as well as courses for those wishing to become massage therapists. The courses on offer are: the Certificate in Exercise & Health Fitness (Accredited by University of Limerick) and the Certificate in Sports Massage Therapy (Accredited by ITEC). These professional qualifications are highly regarded in Ireland and abroad.
Motions is one of the longest established and best known institutions in Ireland offering health and fitness courses with professional qualifications. Motions was established in 1984 and today it runs a variety of full and part time courses. The fitness instructor/personal courses take place in UCD, Dublin 4, Palmerstown Sports Complex, Dublin 20 and in the Irish Life Mall in Dublin city centre. The massage therapy course is based in Palmerstown Sports Complex in Dublin 20. Full details of the courses are given below.
Since its establishment, Motions has built up an extraordinary team of dedicated tutors. Motions is owned by Brendan Hackett. He set up Motions in 1984 after graduating from Thomond College with a degree in Physical Education. He added a masters degree in sports psychology to his qualifications in 1993 and now works with many of Irelands international and national coaches, teams and individual athletes. He has worked with teams and individuals at every Olympics since Atlanta, with 20 intercounty GAA teams, with 3 League of Ireland soccer teams, AIL rugby teams and with individuals in many sports. He was an intercounty football manager for five years, coached the Irish Compromise Rules team in 1990 and was a coach to a number of international athletes for over ten years. He has written the book, Success from Within, a guide to achieving success in sport and he continues to present seminars throughout the country.
Certificate in Exercise & Health Fitness (Accredited by the University of Limerick)
This course is primarily for people who would like to become Fitness Instructors/Personal Trainers. In recent years, however, many have taken this fitness instructor training course for their own personal development and to improve their overall knowledge of health and fitness.
The Certificate in Exercise & Health Fitness is the only university accredited fitness qualification in Ireland and it is a Level 6 award on the National Qualification Framework. The Certificate is accredited and awarded by the University of Limerick and all participants are registered with UL. Graduates of the Certificate in Exercise & Health Fitness can go on to further study and earn credits towards a Diploma or Degree in Exercise and Health Fitness from UL.
The Certificate in Exercise and Health Fitness equips graduates to teach and instruct circuit training, body conditioning, step, exercise to music and weight training as well as conduct fitness assessments and design individual fitness programmes. There are also modules in the structure and function of the body, health and fitness, business and first aid to complement the practical modules.
Graduates typically work as fitness instructors, personal trainers, gym instructors and fitness consultants. Many work in leisure centres, fitness clubs and hotels but an increasing number of graduates have set up their own fitness business

This massage training course is for anybody who would like to become a massage therapist. The course is suitable for people who want to develop a career or for those learning about massage therapy for personal interest. The course is very practical in nature with sixty per cent of the class time devoted to learning and practising massage techniques. Students will learn a full range of techniques enabling them to treat clients using holistic massage, relaxation treatments and sports massage therapy. The theory modules include anatomy and physiology of the body's major systems as well as the core subjects of professional ethics, client care and sports injuries.
ITEC qualifications are the most widely recognised professional qualifications for massage therapists. The International Therapy Examination Council (ITEC) is based in London and is an internationally recognised awarding body accrediting vocational qualifications in beauty, complementary and sports therapy.
