Since its foundation in 1974, Kimmage DSC has facilitated education and training for development professionals working in a range of occupations from over sixty five countries. Programmes on offer reflect a combination of formal and non formal educational methodologies and are run at undergraduate (BA Degree) and post graduate (MA and Graduate Diploma) levels, with options to study on a full-time or part-time basis. They provide hands-on practical training whilst also providing an opportunity for participants to become fully familiar with relevant theories of development. Kimmage DSC also offers a popular part time evening course, entitled ‘Understanding Development’.

All courses run in the Kimmage DSC and those run on an outreach basis are accredited by the Higher Education and Training Awards Council of Ireland (HETAC).
Programmes currently on offer include:
- MA / Post Graduate Diploma in Development studies
- BA Degree in Development Studies
- 'Understanding Development' Part-time evening course
Kimmage DSC offers a unique combination of studies which aim to combine the practical and the theoretical, the academic and the skill based. The development studies courses of Development Economics, Sociology, and Anthropology are complemented by subjects which have a large training, active learning and skills component, such as Adult Education, Group Facilitation Skills, Gender and Development, Financial Management and Project Planning and Management. Such courses have proven invaluable in enabling practitioners to work effectively for social, economic and political change in society and the holistic development of all.
The DSC offers courses at different levels, facilitating people already holding higher level qualifications as well as those without. The KDSC is particularly keen to provide an opportunity to micro-development or grassroots project workers who may lack the usual entry requirements for university to enhance their understanding of development theory, to acquire new skills and to obtain an internationally recognised higher level qualification. Vacancies also exist for postgraduate level students interested in embarking in pursuing a career in some aspect of development work either in Ireland or abroad.
