Who we are

Over the past fifteen years the college has established a strong
Art Therapy Department, providing opportunities for learning
about, and experiencing, the Art Therapy process. Pioneering art therapy training in Ireland, the Summer School was set up in 1991. Building on its success, the Crawford College established an Art Therapy Foundation Course. Over the years our department has developed a range of courses to meet the increasing demand to find out more about Art Therapy. We now offer Introductory Weekends, Night Classes, the Summer School, the Foundation Course in Art Therapy, Facilitation Training Courses and ultimately the qualifying Masters in Art Therapy. This professional training course was the first of its kind in Ireland and in June 2001 our first Irish trained Art Therapists graduated.

Each year the Cork Summer School in Art Therapy welcomes up to sixty participants, providing them with a unique opportunity to learn about and experience the Art Therapy process. This year, in recognition of our fifteenth anniversary and Cork’s designation of European Capital of Culture, we have decided to offer an extra special Summer School. Participants will be offered an introduction to a range of Arts Therapies through lectures, and the chance to explore the therapeutic potential of art, music, drama or dance movement through experiential workshops. Members of the arts therapies profession in Ireland, Britain, Europe and South Africa have been invited to staff it.

For some this Summer School may be the first steps on the road to a career in a Creative Arts Therapy. For others it may be an opportunity to re-engage with their creative identity. Every year this course has proved to be an invaluable personal encounter, whatever one’s motivation for attending. The intensive workshops and lecture series will provide a stimulating, challenging and ultimately rewarding experience for everyone.
