Outreach Centres
It should be a fundamental aim of all educational institutions to benefit its surrounding community and seek to improve the environment in which it resides. DCU has recognised this responsibility by developing an outreach centre in Ballymun which was opened by Sean Haughey (Minister for Lifelong Learning) last week...
DCU is an impressive university which has grown in size and stature since it welcomed its first students in 1980; it now boosts a great range of sporting and academic facilities; providing access those to living in the area is no doubt just and fair.
The Outreach Centre seeks to link these considerable resources to the neighbouring communities of DCU and in doing so contribute to the increase in the quality of life for marginalised groups in the area. Offering flexible education to local residents is the overall goal; with emphasis on the adaptable nature of the provision in order to accommodate those who have family and work constraints.
Education should undoubtedly be something which is available to all citizens in an equal and accessible fashion; director of the Outreach Centre, Catherine Murray, says that the hope is to give opportunity to those who didn’t stay within the education system the first time around.
By providing these resources there is hope that further learning will become a more popular and realistic option for greater numbers of people; personal and academic support will also be given in order to facilitate those who may be apprehensive about re-entering the world of education.
