Student Profile Courtney

Courtney Tyler's better than most students of Spanish. This pupil of the Cervantes Institut is already passing out the Advanced level and is ready for a tougher language-learning challenge.

Living on Ebenezer Terrace on the city's south side, Courtney is originally from Traverse City, Michigan. Just turned 23, she's been taking the Advanced One course in Spanish at the Cervantes Institut on Northumberland Road since September of this year and will continue till January.

"It's great - it's really professional - well, its run by the Spanish Government", says Courtney of her course. "I've learnt loads. I need to be in the environment like this - an environment of needing to learn."

Courtney knows people taking the beginners class at the Institut and, having learnt the language over the past few years, is confident about her abilities. "I am lucky in that I have lived in the country and have learnt in that way. Others there have done all their learning through the class. I reckon I could be able for a higher level at this stage."

There are nine students in total in Courtney's class: "There's a real big mix, but most of the people are in their thirties. I reckon it's about half and half between students of my own age and then older people. And then there's a few people in their sixties."

Courtney cycles in to her class every Tuesday at quarter to six and she reckons her biggest problem is the frequency of the courses. "I think you should go more often than once a week…you just need that when learning a language." But the course doesn't end after class in the evening. "Most of the time we get homework." Ouch!, says Nightcourses.com - what happens if you don't do it…? "Nothing happens" laughs Courtney, "but you should do your homework!"

Courtney's teacher is a Spanish woman called Isabelle: "She's very Spanish, very young and we speak in Spanish all the time in class."

A highlight of the course for Courtney is the use she makes of the Cervantes library: "It's really good. I think I use that most, with the cassettes, videos and books you can get there." Suertes Courtney! Now if Courtney's enthusiasm has you enthused, check out Nightcourses.com Search Database for evening classes in Spanish available wherever you live.
