Hip Hop Dancing
Do you ever feel that you are losing touch with the Y Generation? Do you quite literally want to get down with the kids? If so, then perhaps you should consider a course.
If you really want to wow the young fellas/wans in Copperfaced Jacks, then why not go the whole hog and learn a made-to-measure routine for a song? The Streets Ahead Dance Company offers a four-week adult beginner Making the Video course, where you learn a specially choreographed hip-hop dance routine to a chosen song. They've already done Justin Timberlake's Rock Your Body, Mystique's Scandalous, and are moving on to Christina Aguilera. Apparently, a lot of Irish people want to get Dirrty, as the routine to the video is back "by popular demand".
Although this is a class for beginners, you should probably avoid it course if you are in any way shy. The course description hints that a bubbly personality is a prerequisite.
"Get ready to lose those inhibitions and really show off. You'll learn a start, an ending and some great dance steps in between. Bring props and even dress up to the theme song if you like."
If this sounds like something you would like to do, then why not don a pair of leather chaps, a tiny skirt or an inappropriate piercing and head along? You get a discount for booking two blocks of classes and the organisers are open to suggestions as to what video they should do next. So if you've always wanted to learn a really phat routine to Rod Stewart's Sailing, then now's the time to ask.
However, if you think that learning a routine to a video is only appropriate if you are an eleven-year-old girl, then perhaps you should consider taking a broader class. Why not take a course in hip-hop/street dance? According to many popular TV programmes, this style of dance comes in particularly handy in a host of stressful situations. For example, if a bus driver says that there is no room for a little un, then you can change his mind with a few body pops and that ubiquitous 'talk to the hand' move. However, a course can only teach you so much. The real secret lies in "the flavour you bring to the dance. You gotta have flow," say the producers of the instructional video, Hip Hop Shop.
If your feeling funky, then dance class is the place for you. So get up, get up and get down...
