Cooking

If you’ve always harboured a secret desire to be one of those people who can rustle up a three course meal without a bead of sweat in sight then maybe you should hot foot it to a cookery class. Cooking is the art of preparing food for eating by the application of heat; so if you like food and have been known to eat then you’re the perfect candidate. As a wise one once noted – cooking is an art, but you can eat it too.

The current fascination with cooking is apparent with the minor celebrity that chefs such as the foul mouthed Gordon Ramsey and the annoyingly chirpy Jamie Oliver are enjoying. Their shenanigans in the kitchen have viewers enraptured and while this flurry of attention might be more about the drama than the dessert recipe there’s no doubt that eating in is the new eating out. Those who once wrinkled their brow at making toast are now inviting hoards of friends over to sample their new prawn linguini recipe.

Cookery courses on offer in Ireland are diverse and exotic. You can go for the popular option of Italian or go for something a bit more outlandish like a course in Lebanese or Thai cuisine. Programmes are provided for those with minimum skills to those of the more advanced calibre. Cookery classes are easier to dedicate time to than others; the most obvious advantage being that you are allowed to eat your creations; a satisfying and rewarding prospect for the ego as well as the taste buds.

In addition to learning recipes and the process of whipping up a meal fit for a Michelin star restaurant cookery programmes will teach you a lot about nutrition and the powers of certain foods. For example; chilli can help you sleep better as well as preventing colds. The old favourite of countless family tables – eat your carrots or you’ll go blind – actually holds some truth in it; a carrot contains extremely high levels of Vitamin A and its antioxidant compounds promote good vision; so get chomping!

So if you’d like to be the master of the kitchen with abilities that would rattle Bree Van de Kamp and stun Gordan and Jamie into a rare moment of silence then maybe you should do the world a favour and get yourself to your nearest course provider; just don’t forget to invite us over for dinner…
