Widely recognised in the computer industry, it will help you gain an entry-level position as a computer service technician or on an IT help desk. Both the Irish Academy of Computer Training (IACT) and the College of Management IT (CMIT) provide A+ certification courses. An A+ certificate shows prospective employers that pressing CTRL ALT DEL isn't your only solution when things go wrong - it is proof that you know what you're doing when it comes to PC support and repair.
The A+ certification provides an entry point into an IT career as well as the industry standard to validate foundational skills. The updated CompTIA A+ certificate requires two tests – A+ Essentials and A+ 220-602.
The first exam, A+ Essentials, concentrates mainly on hardware and operating systems and the “essential” skills needed for any entry level service technician job. Training for this exam includes learning the basic skills needed for computer installation, building, upgrading, configuring, troubleshooting, optimising and diagnosing. It also covers basic software and security skills.
The second exam, CompTIA A+ 220-602 is designed specifically for those wishing to work in a mobile or corporate technical role. It also prepares students for working in a role that requires client interaction and services, such as the positions of IT Administrator, Field Service Technician and PC Technician.
Candidates who pass both exams become fully certified with CompTIA A+ and IT Technician designation.
Although it is possible to get the kind of job you will be qualified for - i.e. service technician - without the qualification, with it you are more likely to get the position.
